I have a Verizon account with a phone number that have had for some time and do not want to change the number.?

Since the Apple iPhone is an AT and T product, if I bought one would the phone number transfer ? If you don't know, does anyone have an idea as to how I can find out ? Otherwise, it may be BBerry forever. Its called porting.
