How would one go about unlocking a CDMA phone from one service to change it for another?

I'm considering being an engineering major and this seems like a fun project to due. I've done some research as to how CDMA phones works and I understand that each phone has a specific number which is known by your cellular phone provider as means to connect you to their service.

So does this mean if you can find a way to retrieve your phone's number, you can select any other CDMA phone and flash its bios (or where ever the number is saved) with your old phones number? This being a complex alternative to merely swapping SIM cards with other service providers.

I wouldn't know how to go about doing any of this without some sort of program, are there any?

MetroPCS is my service provider, if that information is necessary. How would one go about unlocking a CDMA phone from one service to change it for another? There are certain people who do that sort of things for a living so yes you can unlock a phone from your service provider. On the other hand you have to be sure that the other service provider is compatible with your phone.

I found this forums to be help full

You are referring to ESN or MEIDs

Verizon uses a whitelist of ESN/MEIDs, so they know if you are trying to activate a phone (that isn't Verizon) on their network.

I believe Sprint is a little more forgiving about activating an unlocked phone.

For both, you need to call their respective customer service numbers.

You cannot get around this with %26quot;software.%26quot; The wireless companies control the network and what devices access it.
You can't just simply transfer the Mobile Identity Number (MIN, i.e., your phone number) from one handset to another and not notify the CDMA carrier of your intent.

Authentication depends on a number of factors, including the MIN and ESN of the user/handset combo. If they don't match up, your account is locked out. ESN is hardware-unique and you are not to tamper or clone that info.

Also, VZW knows the ESN range in which VZW capable phones are assigned, so they can tell if it's one of their own or if they need to program their servers to recognize a non-VZW phone. Now you see why having to onesy-twosy accept ESNs from non-VZW phones can be such a headache to validate and maintain.
Heh,

:) it's fun subject,

You would need a few things to clone a phone, just to get voice you'll need MSID, nam and ESN :)

This will also enable 1x

To get evdo/data fully working, you'll need alot more.

MetroPCS will know by a few factors, a few which I don't feel sharing to the public of yahooanswers, hehe.
