Is there a way to do this for your old phone number?

Is there a way to leave a voicemail type of thing, for when people call your old phone number (a phone number that is no longer being used by anyone), that warns them that you have changed numbers, and redirects them to the right number, or just explains what your new phone number has changed to?

Sort of like when a radio station changes frequency numbers, and when you set your radio to their old numbers, it tells you where they have moved to.

My mom had to change the phone number of her business, and now she isn't getting nearly as many calls, and she is getting lots of complaints about %26quot;not answering the phone%26quot;. It seems like using radio ads and word of mouth to spread the update about the new phone number isn't good enough!

So is there a way to do this? How would we set it up with the phone company?Is there a way to do this for your old phone number?changing a business phone number is always a problem!

Your/her choices;

1) send a change of address card to everyone in her phone directory (I hope she uses Outlook!)

2) place an ad in the paper - not usually productive

3) pay the person that got her old number a fee to voluntarily tell the caller the new number

4) subscribe to the old number and put an outgoing message on that line.

She can work it out with the old telco, the easiest thing to do is the last suggestion. Get a cell phone, port the old number to the cell phone. She can either answer the cell phone or have it go to voice mail.

Why she switch? You can take the old number with you when you switch phone carriers.

Old way: Direct mailing to past customers.

BillBoard Ad.

Take ads out on back of grocery receipts.
Nope, because of all the new laws protecting your current number. If you switch carriers, you can keep your number and stuff. You could keep the old number running for a while and leave a voice mail message.
With everything being modern, there should have been an offer for changed number intercept. If the phone company can't provide it and you moved to a different telephone exchange, you could port the number to a VoIP service like Vonage, 8x8, Ooma, etc and actually get TWO lines for not a lot of money. Something that might be appealing as it doesn't penalize you for business numbers or charge for incoming calls would be http://www.vitelity.com/?p=network2 You'll find that the rates can be extremely competitive for less than you paid for ONE phone line at your old carrier. The idea is that you would place a requrest or porting request for the numbers you used to have and direct them via internet to your present location and terminate them in a 2-line ATA box. A Vitelity agent can help you.
